There is a time in my childhood that stands out as an especially happy one. I was only very small and my parents bought a little house where they spent a lot of time putting in gardens. We had chickens and my dad was very proud of his vegie patch. We moved from that home and life changed and got busy. But, the fond memories of that period in my life remain.
I don’t think it is any coincidence then, that I have always associated that way of living with my personal kind of “utopian” ideal. It is something I have been working towards having myself for a long time now. To have a slow kind of life and to grow as much food as I can for my family. Home grown stuff tastes good, it’s convenient, and with practise it gets easier to do. We have hens as well and their eggs compliment many of our meals. When I am feeling stressed or tired, being in the garden helps me unwind. I go out with the kids and the hours disappear. I hope they are experiencing the simple pleasures I did. That the memories we make resemble my own happy ones.
So today was a garden day, and we spent it making some new beds. We used old water tanks which cut up, make the best vegie patches. My husband did all the hard work and I gave advice and did what I could, now being 35 weeks pregnant!.
It was a good arvo and I can’t wait to get planting a summer crop. With the new beds I am pleased I can now leave all the plants still going strong in, (crop rotation at it’s finest!). It’s also weird to think that by the time we harvest the next planting, the baby will be here.
So growing things makes me very content, it saves me money and it keeps me sane. It makes me feel all is well in my world!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the things that make you happy and content. Have a wonderful week everyone!
